An Open Letter to Lion Staff and Players

Dear Lion Staff and Players,

It is a tough time for everyone right now. It’s understandable. You just got beat by four scores at home. There’s reason to have hope, and I’ll tell you why

” A wounded Lion is still fiercer than a strong wolf.” Matshona Dhilwayo, Author

First of all, I refuse to believe that Tarleton is 26 points better than you. Not for one second. Things happen, the officiating was questionable, at best, and things got out of hand. I can speak for The Wire staff when I say we understand.

You’re not where you want to be right now, or where you thought you should or could be. That doesn’t mean that it can’t be overcome. There’s been struggles in all three areas. It was bound to happen. You’re replacing one of the very best quarterbacks in program history. Three starters on the best offensive line in all of Division 2. Two starters on defense, as well as a brand new coordinator and new system. Being defending champions and getting every team’s absolute best shot is no picnic, either.

You’ve done an outstanding job in spite of everything however. You’ve come a long way in a very short time. You have a lot to be proud of. There’s no problem that you have that cannot be fixed if you put your heart and soul into it. Believe in yourselves. The rest of us sure do. I can promise you that we will keep the faith.

You know, I truly pity the teams we have left on our schedule. Western New Mexico, West Texas A&M, UT-Permian Basin, and Angelo State. I fear for them. They are going to face a very angry and determined group of Lions that will neither ask or give any quarter. They are merely obstacles in a path that are to be dealt with and swept aside. To say things are going to get ugly for them is an understatement.

I will mention this about last season here, and only once. You did not go into the playoffs as a conference champion last year. It was touch and go as to whether you would make the field at all. Make it, you did. And look how it turned out.

Just play the remaining schedule with all your heart and fiber that you have, and let the chips fall where they may. I firmly believe that if you do that, then when the playoffs roll around, you’ll be there. Heaven help those guys from Tarleton if you see them again. They wont’ get away with that stuff again.

Hang Tough. Just get your foot in the door. Then unleash the beast.

  1. I agree with everything. Also a lion’s roar in the wild is a frightening thing; it does not need to be accompanied by a cannon. #lionsroarnotgoboom #banthecannon
