Great Weekend in Lion Athletics, let’s get to it.
Volleyball-The Lion Volleyball team won 2 straight matches to push their record closer to .500 with back to back wins at University Fieldhouse this past weekend. Friday Night the Lions took down Arkansas-Fort Smith and then followed it up with a win over Oklahoma Christian that Saturday afternoon, pushing their record to 4-6 overall. The Lions are 4-3 over their past 3 matches and are 3-3 in LSC play. The Lions head to East Central just over the state line in Ada, Oklahoma for a non conference tilt, and then make a trip to Wichita Falls for another LSC match with Midwestern State and then head to Lawton, Oklahoma for a match with Cameron. The chances are very good that the Lions will finish this weekend with a winning record after a very rough start.
Soccer-The Ladies on the pitch took an absolutely heartbreaking loss in Canyon at ranked West Texas A&M. A penalty shot at the end of the game put the Lady Buffs over the Lions, putting the Lions in a 3-4-1 record. The Lions face off against UT-Tyler Wednesday night in Commerce and then head to the South Plains for a matchup against Lubbock Christian on Saturday afternoon. The schedule just gets tougher from here and conference wins will be needed at a premium.
Cross Country-In their first team event since their first meet in Dallas, the Women’s Cross Country team came back fresh and had a great outing at the Chili Pepper Festival hosted by The University of Arkansas. Alondra Campa of Kaufman ran her personal best. She was joined in her personal best by Katelyn Matthews (Burleson) and Evelyn Brown of Paris in that. This was by far the strongest performance by the Women’s team as they finished 16th out of 30 teams, including taking down some pretty strong programs. This Saturday the Ladies head back on the course as they participate in the Chargers invite in Huntsville, Alabama. The Lion Men did not compete the past two weeks, but will join their female counterparts in the Chargers invite.
Golf-The Men’s Golf team is currently in Pueblo competing in the CSU-Pueblo invitational, and the Women are in Canyon in the West Texas A&M tournament. Results will be posted on The Lion Wire Facebook page.
Football-The Lions are fresh off a huge win to get them back into the D2Football.com Top 25, but getting no love from the AFCA polls. Saginaw Valley State comes to town, members of the GLIAC conference, where they share a home with Lion playoff rivals Ferris State and Grand Valley State. The Cardinals are not to be taken lightly as they almost defeated # 3 Ferris State earlier in the year. Russ will have the Pre-Snap read up to look at the offense and then the Blue Gang Notebook later on in the week. This is the 2nd of 3 straight games at home, and then there are 2 more left after this game. This season is almost halfway done as hard as it is to believe, but we have to keep on moving. McKinney is still the goal.
