Minor Thoughts…2020 Hall of Fame Edition

So as I prepare to submit my nominations for the Texas A&M-Commerce athletic Hall of Fame, I want to focus this year on another teammate that I feel has waited long enough…Allen Roulette.

Allen was a 4 year Letterman for the the Lion teams from 1985-1988. While the squads he played on early did not have a lot of success, Allen was able to garner 3 All-LSC nods during his tenure including All-LSC 2nd team during his senior season on the 8-3 1988 team that was ranked as high as the #2 Division 2 team in the nation (a high that stood until the 2017 National Championship team). Allen was instrumental and a leader that paved the way so HOF’ers like Mike Trigg, Bobby Bounds and Gary Compton could do their thing.

In a vote among his peers Allen was selected as a top ten in All-Time Lion Great Offensive Linemen conducted here at the Wire. Allen’s play stood out even when the team battled thru back to back 2-9 seasons, he was still one of the few Lions recognized as elite by the LSC. He was what we look for in a linemen at Commerce. He packed his own lunch everyday and brought it to work.

With the taste of success he finally got his senior season he continued as a free agent with the Buffalo Bills after leaving Commerce. He also spent time in the Arena League from 1990-1993 with the Albany Firebirds, New Orleans, Dallas Texans and Tampa Bay while even finding time to coach as well, helping lead the Leonard Tigers to a district championship in 1991. He also went on later in the decade to become an elite football official as well doing Texas High School football, College football (Big 12, Southland, MEAC, America Southwest Conference) as well as doing AFL games up to 2010. He then spent a year as a color analyst for TAMU-Commerce and ESPN before being hired to NFL-Europe as an official the year the league folded.

As of now every Lion who has made 3 All-LSC teams has been inducted already. Allen doesn’t have all the other accolades that go with it but making 3 teams is a feat few have accomplished. If you feel this way also then you can submit a nomination online for him by clicking https://lionathletics.com/sb_output.aspx?form=6.

You can also go to https://lionathletics.com/honors/a-m-commerce-athletic-hall-of-fame to print out a form. This can be done for any former Lion you feel worthy of nominations. The deadline to submit a nomination is May 8. Go Lions!
