Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The staff here at the Lion Wire would like to wish all of Lion Nation and even our fans who are not Lions a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and also a Hanukkah Sameach to our Jewish readers (I know you guys are out there).

We are very thankful to all of you telling the Lion Nation about us. It is our pleasure and honor to cover Texas A&M-Commerce athletics, our Alma Mater dear. I also wanted to take a special time to thank Russell McLean and Billy Minor. As most know, I (Brian) started this site back in 2012. I did my best to hold it together as a one man operation, but during the Championship season of 2017, I knew we needed extra help. In came a guy who loves the Lions as much as I do. Russell and I had started to become friends before hand, but when I reached out to him to ask him to look at doing some write ups, I found a bird’s nest on the ground as they say because Russ had always wanted to be a sportswriter, and he has done a great job doing the offensive and defensive analysis, as well as off season information and recruiting. He also had been impacted by the greatest coach in program history, the great Ernest Hawkins and had seen what a National title run looked like in 1980 while helping the coaching staff and being on the sidelines.

As for Billy Minor, who was the first person to subscribe to the site, he always gave me feedback and good information on what it was like to be a Lion in the successful Eddie Vowell era of 1988-1992. It was not until I asked him to come on and give his “Minor thoughts” on games did I see what he could convey to the readers. Billy is one of the best receivers in program history and also knows what it is like to be a small college kid trying to make it in the NFL and had a couple of National title runs of his own to draw experience out of. Also, his experience as a youth coach in Sherman, TX and molding young men through sports also was an angle I needed. The three of us are thankful for all of your support and telling the rest of Lion nation about us.

Finally, we want to thank Tim McMurray, who has been a model Athletic Director, but also encouraged us and thanked us for what we do. Him calling us “best in class guys” was a great compliment, and we do what we do because we are all Lions here. Speaking of, thanks to all the fans who make being a Lion so much fun these days, from tailgaters and boosters to business owners.

This will be the final post of 2019. We will be back the first week of January to cover our Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams, Golf teams, and before you know it, the Spring Football game will be right around the corner.

Holiday Cheers to all!

  1. Dear Brian:

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thanks for the interesting, updating, and fabulous information. I enjoy reviewing my Lion Wire to stay on top of Texas A&M Athletics!

One of the questions I have is to ask for a little help! In the New Year 2020 I would like to see if we can get a Texas A&M Commerce/ETSU Alumni Chapter started in Tarrant County and I want to get the word out.

We have some 6,000+ alumni here in Tarrant County and it would be great to get an active and spirit filled chapter started here.

    Warm Regards,
    DAVE O

    • Dave, Since I live very close to Tarrant County, I will speak to Stephanie Fiorisi about it. She and I were school as undergrads and she works in alumni relations. I am sure she would be willing to help!
