The Morning Wire: January 28

First, my apologies for the lack of info recently. I just got a new computer and it is running better than my last one had been for the past 6 months or so. Anyway, back in the saddle, here is the news from this past week and what to look forward to this next week.

Women’s Hoops-

Jason Burton’s Squad pushed their record to 12-6 overall and 7-3 in LSC play. The Ladies dropped a 81-70 loss to 8th ranked West Texas A&M, followed by another loss to Eastern New Mexico, 90-79. It was the first time the Women had lost since November 29th. However, this past week, the Lions got back into the thick of the LSC hunt with wins over  Western New Mexico 73-60 and Texas-Permian Basin 92-58. This week the Ladies hit the road as they face Texas A&M-Kingsville Thursday Night and then trek down to San Angelo for a tilt with the Rambelles Saturday night, February 2nd. The last time the two teams played the Lions dominated the Lady Javs, but dropped a close home loss to Angelo State. After their weekend road trip, they return back to Commerce for tilts against Cameron on the 7th and then the annual Fill the Fieldhouse game against Midwestern State on the 9th.

Conference Standings-

SCHOOL LSC OVERALL
Angelo State 9-1 14-2
West Texas A&M 8-2 16-2
Eastern New Mexico 8-2 13-5
Texas A&M-Commerce 7-3 12-6
Tarleton State 6-4 13-5
Texas A&M-Kingsville 5-5 8-9

Midwestern State 3-7 6-11
Texas Woman’s 3-7 6-12
Western New Mexico 2-8 6-11
UT Permian Basin 0-10 3-15

Men’s Hoops-

Like their Female Counterparts, the 25th ranked Lions found the trip out to Canyon to be very unwelcoming as they dropped a 21 point loss to the 16th ranked Buffs 87-66. They rebounded with a win in Portales over Eastern New Mexico 112-99, before losing a true head scratcher to Western New Mexico 74-73 in Overtime in Commerce. Once again, the Lions rebounded to take down Texas-Permian Basin 85-78 and also head to Kingsville to face the Hoggies of TAMU-Kingsville, and then head to Angelo State for another slugfest agains the Rams. The Lions defeated both squads earlier in the year in Commerce, but this is now a huge stretch heading into the LSC tournament.

Indoor Season started and the Men’s team got off to a roaring start at the Texas Tech Invite in Lubbock and then at the Pittsburg State Meet in Kansas. The Men’s 4×4 relay team notched the third fastest time in the nation with a 3:14 qualifying time. This is a team that has a real chance to bring back another National Championship in a Track and Field event. Hat Tip Lionathletics.com for the detailed information. Check it out.

Softball-
The A&M-Commerce Softball squad starts their 4th season this weekend at the Arkansas Tech tournament. The Face St. Mary’s Friday Morning, followed by a tilt against Arkansas Tech later that day followed by games against Washburn, Central Oklahoma, Colorado Mines, and finally Augustana. Expectations are high after last year’s Super Regional Title.  Also, there will be a new face to the staff as Gay McNutt, a well known coach of 32 years in various Division I schools, joins the staff in Commerce as the pitchers and catchers coach. She has a super impressive resume and you can read it here-https://lionathletics.com/staff.aspx?staff=255
