The Morning Wire: January 7

Great Weekend for Lion Basketball and the Post Season Honors for Football continue to roll in.

Football-

5 Lions were named to the inaugural Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Small College All-State team, which places the best in Texas that are non-FBS players. Congrats to Vincent Hobbs, Kristov Martinez, Reggie Kincaid, Brucks Saathoff, and Michael Onohua who all made the team. Hobbs, Martinez, and Kincaid were all first team, while Saathoff and Onohua were named to the second team.

Women’s Hoops-

Coach Jason Burton’s squad has improved their record to 8-4 with two huge LSC wins over Midwestern State and then over Cameron. The Lions are 3-1 in LSC play. The wins were both on the road, with the Ladies taking down Midwestern 70-57, followed by a 86-67 win over Cameron. Chania Williams led all scorers against MSU with 17, while Alexis Byrant and Williams both scored 16 in the win over Cameron. The Lions face off against Tarleton State tonight at the University Fieldhouse and then host Texas Women’s Saturday in Commerce. This is a critical stretch of the season where the league is going to start to take shape.

Men’s Hoops-

The Men’s squad had an equally good weekend, pushing their record to 12-2 overall and 4-0 in LSC play. The Lions took down Midwestern 78-64 followed by a 97-80 win over Cameron. The Win over Cameron was huge as the Aggies have given the Lions trouble the past couple of years, but this team looks like a squad that has the ability to go undefeated in LSC play, and not struggling against those teams, but winning by large margins. Willie Rooks continued his superb scoring play by hitting the nets for 20 points against Midwestern and Srdan Budimir along with Tyree Robinson both hit for 15 a piece against Cameron to lead the scoring. The Lions face rival Tarleton State tonight in Commerce and tip off after the Women’s game. The Texans are 12-2 and 4-1 in LSC play. The one mutual opponent the Lions and Texans have is Angelo State, whom the Lions defeated by 11 back in November, and the Texans dropped a 13 point decision to the Rams, but the game is played on the court. The Lions then hit the road after the game against Tarleton by heading west to Canyon to face West Texas A&M on the 17th and then Eastern New Mexico in Portales on the 19th before heading back to Commerce.
