The Morning Wire: July 23

Football: Polls, Preseason, and Media Days.

Per Lionathletics.com, The Lion football team stands at a # 5 preseason ranking nationally, and Linebacker Brucks Saathoff, was named as a Division II All-American Preseason First Team by College Football America Yearbook. Also, The Lions are ranked in the preseason number 6 by Street & Smith’s and # 7 Lindy’s. Lindy’s also have named Senior Tight End Vincent Hobbs (Mesquite, TX) first team preseason All-American and Senior Kicker Kristov Martinez nabbed preseason second team All-American.

Props are in order to Senior Chris Smith from Mansfield, TX for being named to the All State AFCA Good Works team for his performance on the field, in the classroom and in the Community. Smith is a prime example of what we Lions should be proud of when it comes to who we have representing the program. Jason Burton has had his contact extended through 2021, and if anyone has helped his turn his program around, Jason Burton has done that. He has been a fantastic hire and a great coach. Props to AD Tim McMurray for seeing what Burton is building, and this past season showed what the future holds. I have nothing but respect and admiration for how Burton runs his program and how he coaches his squad. In every way, shape, and form, he runs the program with a class and a pride that I am glad to see. HC Burton deserves this and I look forward to seeing him take the program to new heights. Congrats!

Also, major congrats to Brianna Wise, a Lion All-Amerian who signed a pro contract, and is the first Lion Basketball alum to do so in a long time. Congrats to her and happy to see her hard work and talent be taken to the next level.
