Let’s Get To It-
Craig Cases’s squad is now OVER .500 in Southland Conference play. After starting the season 3-11, the Lion Volleyball team has gone 6-3 in their past 9 matches and have a 5-4 conference mark heading into a HUGE weekend of Volleyball at University Fieldhouse. However, they have a test tomorrow night in Beaumont with Lamar University, a team the Lions defeated earlier in the year. On Saturday at 11 AM at The Fieldhouse on Homecoming Saturday The Lions face a McNeese squad they dropped a match to back in September. These two games are CRITICAL for conference play, and are now back in the thick of things.
The Lions Soccer Club dropped two absolutely heartbreaking matches over the weekend. The first was a 2-1 loss to Lamar followed by a 1-0 loss at Northwestern State. The silver lining behind this cloud was the two clubs the Lions lost to were teams they had lost by much larger margins to earlier in the year. That means improvement, and this is a VERY young team. While 4-8-2 overall, they are 4-4-1 in conference and right in the thick of the conference race. The regular season wraps up as the Lions face Incarnate Word in San Antonio on Friday Night before heading to Houston for a 1 PM kickoff with Houston Christian, followed by the season finale at McNeese on October 28 in Commerce. The Southland Conference tournament will be held at Northwestern State University November 2-November 6.
In perhaps their most challenging meet, The Lion Cross Country teams went south to visit Aggieland to compete in the Texas A&M XC meet. The Men finished 27th out of 32 teams in a LOADED field that should prepare them for the Southland Conference Championships on October 28th at Nicholls State. The Women also had a very rough go down at A&M, finishing 37th out of 38 teams. Both teams will wrap up the season at Nicholls State, a course they ran at earlier in the season and did quite well in.
The Lion Men’s team finished 7th out of 9 teams in the New Mexico State tournament earlier in this week with Nathan McCulloch (Edinburgh, Scotland) taking 2nd overall. We have the results as of last night. Their next meet is the Bear Brawl at Baylor University on October 31st. The Lion Women wrapped up their fall season with a 10th out of 16 finish at Little Rock. Their next tournament will be in the Spring Season.
Football-The 4-2 Lions, who are 2-0 and tied for first in Southland Conference play, face off against Houston Christian at 2 PM this Saturday at The Hawk. This game should be a solid win and further drive The Lions into contention for the Southland, but again, do not rest on their own laurels until the final whistle sounds. Russell will have his offensive and defensive previews up, (the pre-snap read is already up) and we will be live on Homecoming Saturday as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1972 National Championship team. Hope to see you there.
