Greetings, Lion fans. Tonight, we are debuting a new feature here at The Wire. Much like our “Five Thoughts” post game analysis, and “Five Storylines” on Fridays, we wanted to hand out our “Five Game Balls” for what we thought were particularly outstanding performances. So, without further adieu…..Five Game Balls for the 15-3 win over West Texas:
Game Ball #1-BLUE GANG DEFENSE: Simply put, they are the best defense in the LSC right now, and one of the Top 10 units in the entire country, without question. In their last 12 quarters of play, they have given up 16 points. That’s not a misprint. 16 points total. In those 12 regular quarters of play the Lion defense has surrendered one offensive touchdown. ONE. Tonight, they forced a safety, a muffed punt return, and two interceptions. That is what our friend, former Lion receiver Billy Minor would call “Championship Level Defense. A hearty “well done” to defensive coordinator Xavier Adibi and his staff. It was the kind of performance that , wherever he is, would have the original architect of the Blue Gang, Bobby Fox, smiling.
Game Ball #2-MITCHELL MCGARRY- The redshirt freshman originally from Australia has been nothing less than outstanding. Averaging 39 yards on 4 punts, McGarry was masterful in keeping the ball away from one of the most dangerous returners in the country in Tobias Harris, limiting him to -2 yards on one return. While not posting huge numbers, McGarry continually flipped field position in the Lions favor , and bailed out the offense when they were sputtering.
Game Ball #3-J.T. SMITH- The senior speedster from Klein Oak in the Houston area was a regular Swiss Army Knife for the Lions tonight. Whatever was needed offensively, and it was a lot, Smith was there to fill it. He had 7 rushing attempts for 32 yards, often on counters and jet sweeps, caught a pass for 15 yards, and had one punt return for 11 yards. Smith is an electrifying talent that Billy Riebock and crew are going to have to find ways to get the ball in his hands more going forward.
Game Ball #4-DOMINQUE RAMSEY- The do everything redshirt senior from Converse Judson was everywhere tonight. He averaged 9 yards on four punt returns, despite WT making every attempt to keep the ball away from him. had one kickoff return for 33 yards that set the Lions up for the lone touchdown drive to open the second half. His interception with just over three minutes left sealed the victory. Well done, sir.
Game Ball #5-JAKE VIQUEZ- Yes, we know Jake missed two long field goal attempts. In an outstanding display of heart and determination, Viquez did not allow the two misses to affect the rest of his performance. His kickoffs were very, very good, and his field goals of 40 and 42 yards, plus an extra point, accounted for 7 of the 15 total points by the Lions. Good job, young man.
Note: The “5 Game Balls” we award are based solely on performance, without regard to unit. One week, it could be all defensive and special teams players. Next week, it might be all offensive. It’s just who we see. Brian and I hope you enjoy.
Now, let’s enjoy a hard fought win.
