Your weekly dose of everything Lion athletics related.
BIG STORY: Texas A&M University-Commerce will be holding public events in Commerce and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex on Tuesday, September 28, related to a special announcement which will have significant impact on the institution and its intercollegiate athletics program. The 11 AM announcement will be held at the Health Sciences Building and then followed up by a press conference at 3 PM at Toyota Stadium in Frisco. As was reported late last week, I am positive that this will be regrind our move to Division I and as a member of The Southland Conference. We will be having some thoughts regarding the press conference later in the week.
Soccer-Lion soccer moved to 3-3-1 overall with a tough road loss at Dallas Baptist, but then buried UT-Permian Basin 8-0 for one of the largest margin of victories in program history. The Lions will visit West Texas A&M for a match at The Pitch in Canyon on Saturday and then return home next Wednesday for a matchup against Texas-Tyler.
Volleyball-The 2-6 Lion Volleyball team looks to make an inroad back into the winning lane as they face off two huge matches this week at The University Fieldhouse. They host Arkansas-Fort Smith and then Oklahoma Christian. This will be a critical stretch of play if the Lion Women look to return to Conference contention.
Football-The Lions play a non-NCAA school this week, but it could be an iffy situation. Last week, Fort Lauderdale University had to cancel their game against top ranked West Florida because they did not have the ability to field a team. There are only 45 members on their dress roster, but I do know their first two games were cancelled due to COVID protocols. Suffice it to say this will be a slow Newsweek without counting the move do Division I. Russ will have one complete preview since we don’t have much regarding stats, but will have something to look forward to, and hopefully a game on Saturday.
