Overview-Saturday night. It is a matchup of two heavyweights in D2 Football in Commerce, TX. West Florida ran a gauntlet to reach the top of the polls, winning the 2019 National Championship, beating down Southwest Baptist last week, and surviving a wire to wire game against Division I McNeese State. However, this game is more than just another road trip for West Florida and a home opener for Texas A&M-Commerce. It is a gut check for both, with National Title Implications already in just week 3. For the Lions, this is their chance to prove they belong back in the top ten, a chance to rinse out the bitter taste of last week’s shocking loss, and a chance to knock off # 1, which just happens to be the team they defeated almost 4 years ago to bring a National Championship back to Commerce for the first time in 45 years. It is a battle of of two teams with a lot to gain and a whole lot more to lose. It’s a battle for everything on the line.

Strength vs. Strength-West Florida can score, and they score a lot. The Lion defense is as stout as they have ever been. If one needs a blueprint for how to win this game, just look at the Tarleton State playoff win in 2019. Pressure and frustrate WF Quarterback Austin Reed, keep the WF off the field by controlling the clock and grinding the WF defense, which is not their strongest point, on the field and pound away at them. Last week the theme was to throw like crazy, this week, it is to run like there is no tomorrow. If the Lion defense rattles Reed and keeps him from throwing for under 300 yards while matching their offensive output from last week, the Lions will win this game.

Size versus Speed-The Lions hold a decisive size advantage over the Argos, while WF loves to run the field like second graders on their last day of school. If the Lions can use their size to be more physical and punish WF, while keeping Austin Reed and company on the sidelines, this will be a huge help for the Lion cause.

No QB Issue-Jaiave Magalie is QB1. There is no quarterback controversy. He is the guy until Miklo Smalls comes back, if ever. The reason you saw Eric Rodriguez was Magalei was having severe knee pain which was affecting his ability to step into passes. With those issues gone, the homeostasis is back in the quarterback situation. Ja is QB1 while Eric Rodriguez and Brock Nellor are backing him up.

One Big Chance-A win Saturday night would be a metaphorical mouth rinse from the nasty taste of the loss to Midwestern State last Saturday night. The word is this week the lessons were learned from the collapse of last week and this week of practice was as focused and intense as ever seen during the Bailiff years. A win puts the Lions back in the top 10 and with huge momentum going into the rest of the season.

Harlon Hill Watchlist Showdown-Harlon Hill Trophy watchlist guys are on the field. It is Dominique Ramsey leading the Lion defense versus Austin Reed leading the West Florida offense. Ding Ding, round 1, let’s begin. The is more than just one trophy at stake here.
