A huge weekend in Lion athletics, lets look at the recap and then what is coming this week.
Soccer-
The Lion Women suffered a rough loss on Thursday night 3-0 to Metro State, but then took down 18th ranked Colorado State-Colorado Springs on Sunday 4-3. The win was the first win over a ranked opponent since 2017 and was huge for the Lions from a Strength of schedule perspective. The Lion Women head back to Commerce and have their home opener versus Fort Lewis Thursday Night at the Lion Soccer Field with a 7:30 start, and then host UC-Colorado Springs, who will no doubt be looking for revenge, Saturday Morning at 11 AM.
Cross Country-
The Lion Cross Country teams competed at the Dallas Baptist Invitational in Grand Prairie. The Lion Men finished 5th out of 6 teams. Alex Speer was the lone top 20 finisher, with the Freshman from Robinson taking 7th place out of 75 with a time of 26:04 in the 8 Kilometer race. On the Women’s side, the Lion Women tied for 6th and were paced by Kaufman Freshman Alondra Campa with a 26th place finish with a time of 20:30 in the 5 Kilometer run. Both squads get ready to host the annual East Texas State shootout Friday night at 6:00 PM at Centennial Park in Commerce.
Volleyball-
The Lion Volleyball will finally start their fall season after it was cancelled due to health protocols at Southeastern Oklahoma State. They head to Denver at Metro State where they face Central Missouri at 11 AM on Friday Morning and then take on Metro State Friday at 2:30 PM. They will then face two future opponents to be determined on Saturday. The Lions head home for their home opener on September 17th against Eastern New Mexico.
Football-
With the Lions having taken a huge 12-6 win over Colorado State-Pueblo Thursday night, the Lions are getting ready for our hated rival Midwestern State this Saturday at Choctaw Stadium (what used to be The Ballpark in Arlington) for a 6 PM kickoff on Saturday, September 11. The Lions look to move up in the AFCA poll (really the only one that matters) and with some teams having played some subpar openers, we will see how far, if any, the Lions move up. The Pre-Snap read and the Blue Gang Notebook with Russell McLean will be up on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively, to preview the Lions matchup against the Mustangs, who defeated Quincy University 40-21.
