Finally, after all this time, it is game week. A special shoutout to the student athletes that begin classes this week and prepare for their first games this next week. Let’s get to it.
After a 7-7 spring season, the Lion Volleyball team, led by Craig Case in his 10th year at the helm head up to Durant, Oklahoma to play in the Southeastern Classic at Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Lions face host Southeastern State on Thursday night at 6 PM, then face Emporia State at 10 AM on Friday Morning, followed by a noon tilt on Saturday against Central Oklahoma, and then close out the tournament with a 6 PM dual against Southern Nazarene. This should provide a great preview into the season as the Lions face some pretty good teams. Their next set of games will be in the Metro State Classic in Denver with opponents to be determined, and the home opener is against LSC foe Eastern New Mexico on September 17 at 6 PM. The Lions are led by Seniors Destiny Greenwood, Riley Davidson and Sydney Anderson. In their last full season, the 2019 Lions went 24-7 and lost in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division II Volleyball tournament to Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Neil Piper starts his 22nd season as head soccer coach and his looking to get back to his winning ways after a tough spring season. The Lions start the season on the road against Metro State University in Denver on Thursday Night, and then play UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday at noon. The Lions are led by Seniors Leslie Campuzano, Skylar Sorrell, Hallie McCarroll, Cora Welch, Kara Blasingame, and Rylie Robertson. In their last full season, the Lions went 10-8-1 in the Fall of 2019 and bowed out in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
The Lion Men and Women start their seasons this Saturday just down the road in Grand Prairie, just south of Dallas, in the Dallas Baptist hosted Orville Rogers Opener. The Lion Men are picked to finish 6th in the LSC, and the Women 14th. The Annual East Texas State Shootout Meet will be the next meet up on Friday, September 10 in Commerce.
