Lion Hoops: LSC Tournament Bracketology

Well, it is March, and for Basketball fans, this is the second best month of the year, (other than October, when the season starts).

For the Lion Women Basketball team, we are witnessing history with the best team record wise to ever play for Texas A&M-Commerce Women’s Basketball. The Lion women finished first overall in the LSC, and won their Division as well. Let’s take a look at the LSC tournament bracket. The Lion Men have notched another solid regular season and a Division title, but need to have a great, not just good, but GREAT showing in the LSC tournament to make it back to the NCAA tournament. Lets break down the brackets.

The Lion Women face off the winner of the matchup between St. Mary’s and Cameron in the Quarterfinals. Assuming they win that game, they will face the winner of either Tarleton State or the Eastern New Mexico/Oklahoma Christian first round game. If The Lion women get through their end of the bracket, they will face either West Texas A&M or Lubbock Christian. Like the Lions, both the Lady Chaps and Lady Buffs get first round byes. 3 Wins gets the Lions the LSC tournament championship trophy, and it looks like all roads lead to a tough West Texas A&M or Lubbock Christian team on Sunday. No doubt the road gets tougher, but win the tournament, and Commerce, TX is where the NCAA South Central Regional Women’s tournament is held.

At 17-11, the Lion Men won the LSC East Division and head into the tournament at 17-11. The unfortunate part of this, is that the truth is unless the Lions win the LSC tournament, they are probably going to be staying home this postseason. They have had some good wins this year, but of their 11 losses, 9 have been to conference opponents. That is going to be hard to overcome. The Lions first face off with Arkansas-Fort Smith, a team they had no business losing to closing out the season. Then, they face top seeded West Texas A&M. That is where things get about as tough as they can get because that is the only team the Lions lost to in a convincing fashion. If they were to somehow get by the Buffs, the would face the winner of Angelo State vs Midwestern/Lubbock Christian. The Lions defeated MSU both times they played this year, Lost by 20 to Lubbock Christian after being tied with them for 30 of the 40 minutes played, and lost to Angelo State by 3. The team you see the Lions facing if they make it the tournament Championship is St. Mary’s, a team they lost to by 1 point back in November.

Stat: The Lions lost 5 games this year by 5 points or less, 4 of them LSC games.

Tip Times: Lion Men VS. Arkansas-Fort Smith, 6 PM Tuesday Night, University Fieldhouse, Commerce

Lion Women VS. Cameron/St. Mary’s, 6 PM Thursday Night, Comerica Center, Frisco
