5 Minor Thoughts…week 7 vs. Tarleton State

Finally we got a break. Weather pushes the second half to Denton and we finally tamed the Mustangs. This team has given Coach Carthel more fits than any other opponent. No time to waste though as TSU is coming to town. Bounds provides the final thought once again. Let’s get to it.

First thought…MSU is definitely a top 10 team. They have a very solid team. I have a few MSU alumni buddies who are quick to point out that last year we had one loss and it was to the them. Times up! That ship has now sailed.

Second thought…the LSC may very well be the SEC of D2 football. We knew every team would prepare like it was their superbowl when we played and they have. 3 ranked teams and another getting votes. Also a couple of other up and comers. An unblemished conference record could very well get us a top 2 regional seed at the minimum.

Third thought…we have to stay patient and not look past anyone. Getting the best every team has to offer can take a huge toll on a team. No time to relax. We escaped with the win even though we had too many penalties and survived a crucial special teams error. With the improvements we’ve seen over the last couple games it made it possible to still win. Getting a little healthier doesn’t hurt either.

Fourth thought…we need to start faster and finish stronger. This team is capable of being explosive. Against TSU it will be more important than ever. Establish our authority on offense from the start and that defense will do the rest. TSU always plays us tough and Saturday probably won’t be much different. But what if we come out like gang busters with a ground and pound attack that opens the passing game up. We could make short work of these guys.

Final thought from Bounds…Moments like this past weekend can galvanize a football team. This was as quality of a regular season win as this program has had since the 1991 road win in Kingsville. As good of a win as it was it must be followed up with another solid effort this week. It looks like we have another Colby Carthel team that just seems to get better with each passing week. This team still has to get better on offense but I like that it appears we are trending up. The defense is certainly carrying this team as it should.

Finally congrats to the Lions on a clean sweep of the LSC player of the week awards.
