2017 has started and before you know it it will be conference tournament time for the Basketball teams, Track starting, and then the annual Blue and Gold Spring Football game. A lot to get to as we start 2017 so lets right to it.
The Women’s Basketball team heads into 2017, they head in with their best record in a decade, which was the same year that the Lions won the conference went to the Elite 8. The record right now stands at 8-3 overall with a 3-1 record in conference play. HC Jason Burton opined on his squad and the season so far per Lionathletics.com-
“The time off allowed us to get away and a lot of our girls were a little banged up so it gave us time to rest and get healthy, Our girls came back fresh and ready to go. We got some good conditioning in and got our wind back. We are ready to get back to playing. We have struggled in Kingsville the past two years, We won both games but they have been close games. It’s always a tough place to play. Then we go to Angelo and they are ranked top 5 in the country. And Tarleton is 3-1 in conference. These are three tough road trips in a row. You can talk about it as much as you want to but the girls that haven’t been on this stretch before, who haven’t been in Kingsville or Angelo, we are going to have to lean on our returners to help them get into the right mental approach, Hopefully girls like Khala [Riley], Krystal [Pickron] and Artaejah [Gay] and others can step up and lead. If you look at who is playing, six of their top nine players are returners, They have people who have been a part of the struggle and they have developed chemistry. They know what it takes to win now. It’s a team that is playing well and they are definitely playing well at home. They are 4-1 at home on the year. They are playing hard and playing well defensively. As we move throughout conference, we are going to have to shoot the ball better, But more than that, we are going to have to stay poised. I think they are going to throw presses at us and they are going to do things differently. We are going to have to stay poised no matter what they are doing defensively and still execute and find ways to score the basketball.”
The Ladies tip off against A&M-Kingsville in Kingsville at 5:30 Thursday Night.
HC Sam Walker’s group is 10-2 overall and 3-1 in LSC play heading into the second half of the season. The Lions, like their Lady counterparts are coming off some rest and Walker sat down with Lionathletics.com for some thoughts on the big road win against Southern Arkansas and their upcoming matchup against Texas A&M-Kingsville-
“Our defense was good,” he said. “We shared the basketball. With all the guys we had out for that game, it was good to get a win. Every road win is a good win, no matter how you get it done. We can concentrate on conference now,” he said. “We had been looking at the standings but conference games are when it really counts. Every game is going to be competitive. Every game you can win on the road will be a steal.”
And On Kingsville-
“It’s a tough place to play,” he said. “We have probably won there maybe once in the last 10 years. Their coach does a phenomenal job with his players. But I think we are up to the task. It should be a good game on Thursday. We just have to shoot the ball well,” he said. “We have seen it throughout this year. When we shoot the ball well, we have won and when we haven’t, we haven’t done as well. It seems to go hand in hand. When shots go down, we have played better defense and have done a better job sharing the ball. We have to get good shots and knock them down if we want to win.”
Davidson Signs with A&M-Commerce-
Commerce High School All-State standout Volleyball player Riley Davidson signed with the Lions. HC Craig Case picked up a huge recruit from just down the street and had a lot to say about it Davidson. Hat tip Lionathletics-
