PLN Notebook-Big Weekend on the Blacklands

This weekend will be a busy one and a fun filled one if you are a sports fan in Commerce. Tonight the Class AAA Region II Boys Basketball Semifinals tip off at the University Fieldhouse. The first game tips off at 6 which is Brownsboro High (about 15 mins west of Tyler) takes on Lone Star High out of Frisco, one of the newer schools that Frisco ISD has built. In the other Semifinal game at 8 is Madison High from Dallas taking on Kilgore. The Championship game tips off at Noon on Saturday and then the real fun begins.

The Spring Football game starts at 2:00 with pre-game tailgating starting a little after 12 from what I can tell. The scrimmage should last about an hour to an hour and a half. After that, it is back to the Fieldhouse where TAMUC welcomes beloved Rivals Tarleton State University. Women tip off at 5:30 and the Men at 7:30. It is Senior night for both squads and with a lot of people on campus to see all of the other events, expect a big crowd. Plus Tarleton travels well so expect to see some purple in the stands.

A lot of people have asked me what my opinion is regarding what happened last Saturday night when we hosted the Women’s regional finals. For those of you who do not know what happened here is the cliffnotes version. Argyle and Celina were playing a second overtime period to decide who would go to the State tournament. A rivalry already exists between these two towns that are just a few miles apart from each other, but the incident just poured gas on the fire. Both are in the same district as well. Argyle had just hit a set of free throws to go up by one. Celina had 4.8 seconds and no timeouts. Celina inbounded the ball to one of their guards, she raced up the court, just shy of the three point line, heaved up a shot, and was hacked on the arm. The referee blew his whistle, held his arm up, and then the buzzer went off. The Celina player went to the free throw line, then the officials conferred for a few second, and then left the court. Celina fans were in shock as it was obvious that there was time on the clock and even then, a foul before the clock hits all zeros is still a foul. Anyway, the Celina fans were beyond incensed and the Argyle fans were uncomfortable and not happy either as when the trophy and medals were presented to them, Celina fans booed very loudly.  Also, they drove home knowing how the game ended was less than noble. This has been all over North Texas and the UIL has done its typical dodge and deflect questions. This is why I just hate the UIL powers that be. They are nothing but educational bureaucrats that should at least look at the tape and explain themselves. The officials are hired by them, the events are judged by them, and if all they can do is issues some weak kneed pansey statement, well that should tell you why so many people in Texas have a less than favorable view of the UIL and how they run the athletic events.

Also, send good thoughts the way of former Lion Punter/Kicker Cameron Frosch. While not invited to the NFL combine in Indy, he was selected to go a Regional combine and attended the Houston NFL Regional combine a few weeks ago and got invited to the Super regional combine in April. Regional combines are ran by the NFL and are intended to be for guys that didn’t get invited to the big combine out in Indy. That said, Frosch will be up in Detroit to Kick on April the 12th, so lets pull for Cameron and hope he catches the eyes of some scouts.

I will have the Spring game thread open for Comments tomorrow all day.

  1. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was wondering
what all is needed to get setup? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny?

I’m not very web smart so I’m not 100% positive. Any suggestions or advice would
    be greatly appreciated. Kudos

    • Actually it does not. Just a lot of time and effort into it. You have to love what you do and put in the time, and as the commercial says, that is priceless. This is actually free, unless I buy the domain which would cost about 20 dollars a year.
