Overall Analysis-

During the press conference, Coach Carthel said he wanted at least half of the class to be either from DFW or East Texas, and he got 29 guys to fill his class, and they are all from quality programs. I also got to look up the all district selections, and most of these guys made the academic all district teams, which is very good to know. I am somewhat surprised of the amount from the Houston area we signed, but after speaking with him last Fall, Coach Carthel had mentioned that he wanted to go down there and recruit more in that area. We seemed to have signed less guys from the central part of the state, but for this staff to go to Lubbock, Amarillo, and a Border town to get recruits show how dedicated this group is and how they were able sell the program, when in that area you have West Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Sul Ross State, Abilene Christian, Hardin Simmons, McMurry and the like. The ability to sell the program is a big one.

Having over half your class within a 150 mile radius brings arguably the two best football regions for High School and prep ball together, in the Metroplex and East Texas. Bringing kids up to Commerce from both areas will show up to the games and want to come should they get the chance is just outstanding. The one thing that makes me very happy is the fact most of these kids are getting academic scholarships and/or help of some kind. Scholarships are not easy to get in Commerce, trust me, I know. I graduated Cum Laude from the grad school and made the Dean’s list twice and did not get a dime from the school, I had to go to private scholarships. Very pleased.

Now, from a position standpoint, we have 3 quarterbacks that we do need. Chase Pemberton from Wills Point is a very good QB and even though I do not know much about the other two, but he is really a Harrison Stewart-type QB. Tall, big build, and strong arm. I think all will redshirt with Rollison, Stewart, Deric Davis and Trevor Lasseter being guys 1-4, and three of them graduating after this season. One thing that was addressed and that was acted on, were defensive backs. Carthel knows how to put a defense together, and let’s face it, it cost us the 5 losses we had this year, especially teams that ran the ball down our throat. Going up and down, I see a lot of guys that are fast and big and that is what we sorely need to be an LSC Championship team.

Cool Video with HC Carthel talking about his first full season recruiting and what he sees in the future. Check it out.
