Post Game Thoughts-Prairie View A&M

I know, I am late. Pretty late.

But I had to know what I wanted to say.

This game was an absolute and total embarrassment. PVAMU came out ready out of the gates and it showed. They outplayed us. They out-coached us. They out-hustled us. They did their jobs better than The Lions did theirs in every way, shape, and form. It was yet another game that could have and should have been a win and wasn’t, and we are looking at yet another 1 win season.

I would tell you I have an in depth analysis of this game, but I don’t. Do you know why? Because when it became apparent that PV actually got excited to play their homecoming game and scored 21 points before we could blink, I turned off the game at the half and took a nap. Seriously. I never do that, and I never have, not even when Guy Morriss’s teams were playing because I knew they might just pull some out, and had done so, including in his first two years.

When I woke up, I saw the final score and the box score and it confirmed what I thought happened. We lost the game again because we got behind the 8 ball like we have all year long and the 27 points we scored was too little too late. We keep making the same mistakes over and over again, and nothing, and I mean nothing, seems to be changing.

If we were some team full of scrubs that can’t compete at this level but was giving 110% every single game I would say its a pure talent issue, but it’s not. This team has enough talent to compete and like I said earlier, we should be at worst, 5-2. Call me crazy but that is the way I see it. The losses to UC-Davis, Grambling, Lamar, and Prairie View were totally without excuse.

This tells me one thing. Changes need to be made, and a lot of them. I don’t know exactly what because I have no idea who is doing what, but I can tell you this. There are a lot of guys on this team that deserve better, and there are some coaches on this team that deserve better, and the fans and school sure as heck deserve better. The question is where is the dead weight? Who are the ones dragging the team down? Who is not coachable? Who is not buying in? Who refuses to listen? Who is arrogant enough to think this thing is working when it is clearly not? I am not in the locker room and not on the field, and all I can see is the product that is being shown on the TV or on the field, and that is all there is to it.

Right now, we have an Athletic Director that is busting his tail to get our facilities up to top flight status and working with alums to bring back beloved traditions. In a couple of days, our President will wager what little political capital he has to return our school back to a name that reflects the proud traditions of Old East Texas. Everyone seems to be pulling their weight and making the best of this, except football. The whole “we are still making the transition to Division I” argument holds no water with me when you see a soccer team competing for the conference title heading into the last week of the regular season, a volleyball team that is pulling prime recruits and improving every season, Cross Country and Golf teams on both the Men’s and Women’s sides that are in the top half of the conference, and are racking up trophies and steadily becoming top performers in the Southland.

There is a method called “Addition by Subtraction.” What that means is that you make your team better by getting rid of what you don’t need or what is bringing you down. This team, from the coaches on down, know what the answers are. The changes that MUST be made might be painful, but 1 win seasons when we are less than a decade from a National Championship, loss of prestige, and empty stands are much more painful. Trust Me, I know. I was there during those days, and I NEVER want to go back. It is time to make a sharp U-Turn, because we are heading off a cliff right now, and its getting closer to the point of no return.

Roar Back Here.....
