Here is a snip of good news.
The Lion offense ranks in the Top Ten in passing yards and passing offense in Division I FCS, 9th overall in the categories with 287 yards per game. We haven’t been this good in passing offense or in ANY offensive category since 2019. That is a welcome news, and Quarterback Ron Peace, in his first start at Quarterback, threw for 457 yards and 3 touchdowns. That is the most that has been thrown since Luis Perez did so in 2017. Here is the better news, Grambling State, our opponent on Saturday allows over 300 yards passing per game, and one of those opponents is a weak Tuskegee team. Tuskegee threw for 275 yards against the Tigers and allowed over 100 yards on the ground. So far, this matchup looks very good for the Lions.
The passing game aside, the Lions also have the upper hand on the offensive line versus the Tiger D-Line. The UC-Davis D-line was probably the best we have probably faced all year and will face the rest of the year, and so far on film, I see Grambling’s line as much weaker than the UC-Davis D-Line. The Lion O-Line has improved greatly since last year, and while they still have quite a bit of work to do (see our running game stats), it looks much better than last year.
This is one of those situations where you can look at our average offensive output, which is 314 yards of offense per game, and look that Grambling is giving up 430 yards per game and you might be tempted to look at our numbers and not see much of a difference, but look at the quality of opponent we have played and then look at GSU has played. You will see the difference, especially in how comparing UC-Davis vs Tuskegee.
I said this in the recent podcast episode, that I don’t believe that a starter should lose his job due to injury, but I do believe that unless he 100% ready to go, he should sit out until he is 100%. Also, who the starting QB should be has greatly tightened in the race, and maybe it is Peace, and maybe E-Rod. We don’t know yet, but a decision needs to be made soon. The receiving corps is so much better than I expected and I think a lot of that is you see HC Dolezel opening up his playbook and getting the right players in the right plays. Brooks Rigney is a great example of this, and bringing EJ Oakmon out of the backfield and hit him in stride was a beautiful play call. The best part about this offense is that they are getting confident, and I think you will see that play out on Saturday. My only concerns are turnovers and penalties. If The Lions get those under control, there could be a ton of points for the Lions scored on Saturday. This is the best I have felt about the offense in 2-3 years, and it feels good to feel confident again, but the game is played on the field.
We will see what happens at The Hawk.
