The Morning NewsWire: October 6

Apologies for no Wire last week, but we needed to take a break, as it has been a nonstop train since August, so lets get back to the sports.

Soccer-

The Lion Women have gone 4-2 over the past 6 games, and are 4-2 in Southland Conference play. The only losses were dropped matches to Northwestern State and Lamar. After an 0-4-1 start, they are now 4-6-1 and look poised to turn a tough start into a winning season. A 2-0 win over Nicholls this past weekend. The Lions host Southeastern Louisiana on the 9th, followed by another home game against Lamar on October 14, a team they dropped a close 2-1 decision to back in September. Coach Ashley Gordon’s squad, as young as they are, are showing themselves to be a talented group and the rough start they had is paying off dividends right now.

Vollyeball-

HC Craig Case’s team is having a tough go right now as they sit at 5-13, but do sit at 2-3 in conference play. Like their Soccer counterparts, they had a BRUTAL non conference schedule and are YOUNG as 8 of the 16 players on squad are Sophomores or younger. Keep supporting this team, as they have a lot of guts in their matches. The Lion Women hit the road tonight for the first of two Southland Conference tilts at New Orleans and then at Nicholls before heading west for a tilt with former LSC opponent Tarleton State, all on Thursday, Saturday and next Tuesday. They return home October 13 where they face Southeastern Louisiana.

Cross Country-

The Men’s Cross Country team has started the Division I era in a pretty impressive fashion. They took second place finishes in the Dallas Baptist Opener, The A&M-Texarkana Invitational, and the Nicholls State Invitational. This past week they have their toughest go getting 29th of 33 teams at the Chile Pepper Festival hosted by The University of Arkansas, which is always a tough meet. They head down to College Station to compete in the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M University. I do know this much about that course, it is a HARD course. One thing I can tell you being a former XC runner is that you compete against the course as much as you compete against the other people you are running against. This is the final regular season meet before the Southland Conference Championships at Nicholls State, which will be the final meet of the season as the Lions are not eligible for the Regional Championships due to the Division I probationary move.

The Women’s team has had a tougher go in their first meets as they took 5th at DBU, 3rd at Nicholls, but had an impressive showing at the Chile Pepper festival, taking 19th out of 34 teams. Like the Men, they head to Aggieland for the TAMU invitational. October 28th is the Southland Championship meet for both The Men and Women.

Golf-

The Men and Women’s Golf teams have started thier fall season and competition. The Women took a 7th place finish at The Weber State invitational 3 weeks ago, and then followed that up with an 8th place finish at the Sam Houston State tournament in the last week of September. This Monday and Tuesday the Ladies head to Jonesboro, Arkansas to compete in the Lady Wolves classic.

The Men’s team got a rude welcome from the Division I golf world as they finished 14th out of 15th at the Kansas State tournament in early September, but improved at the Colorado State Invitational, grabbing 9th place out of 15. They join their Women counterparts in Jonesboro this Monday and Tuesday.

Football-

Russ has already given you all an offensive preview of our toughest game so far this year, a road tilt with Conference favorite Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond on Saturday. We will have the Defensive preview on Thursday and of course the Friday previews along with our scoring updates and Saturday game updates as we make history yet again by playing in our first SLC game.
